Who They Are

Tiller Strings has been owned and operated since July 2010 by Suzuki violin instructor Megan Tiller. Tiller Strings is operated out of Megan’s home in Harrisonburg, VA.  A long-time musician hailing from a wide variety of musical traditions, Megan seeks to provide an outlet where local musicians, strings students, and teachers can find high-quality instruments, music, and accessories for purchase or rental as the same price as online.  Tiller Strings specializes in “teacher approved,” high-quality violins, violas, cellos, and string basses and accessories for musicians and students of all ages and levels of experience.  Megan will also use Tiller Strings as a venue where interested buyers can find locally and regionally handcrafted instruments including guitars, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers, and more!

Entrepreneurial Philosophy

A Suzuki violin instructor for Eastern Mennonite University’s Music Preparatory Program since 2004, Megan noticed that hundreds of strings students each year were being directed to online sources to purchase music, instruments, and accessories.  Understanding the importance of reliable and experienced face-to-face marketing and wanting to coordinate with a network of local luthiers, Megan sought to fill this void in the greater Harrisonburg area by establishing Tiller Strings. Tiller Strings targets the student/teacher market but remains accessible to a diverse clientele, especially those interested in the local culture of Shenandoah Valley music.  Here, students at all stages of learning are able to find specified Suzuki materials and instrument outfits all in one convenient location and they are able to use instruments at rental prices, or have the opportunity to buy. All musicians are able to find a variety of quality instruments, music, and accessories, have access to locally crafted options, and find a reliable source of instrument maintenance and repair appropriate for the individual instrument through Megan’s network of experienced local luthiers.

How Did You Get Here?

Megan was born and raised in Salem, Virginia and found herself in Harrisonburg for school in 2003.  She began working for the Music Preparatory Program at EMU shortly thereafter.  Since then, she has called the Shenandoah Valley home. Adept at a variety of stringed instruments from a young age (violin, mandolin, banjo, bass, and guitar — to name a few!), sharing her love of music with students of all ages and experiences remains one of Megan’s greatest passions.  Throughout her musical career she has developed a devoted group of students and local musical peers. One of Megan’s prized possessions and outlets for her art is her beautiful violin which was hand-crafted by Arthur Conner, a luthier in Copperhill, Virginia, close to where Megan was born.  Having first-hand knowledge of the unique skill of this region, Megan strives to make Tiller Strings a venue that will help link others to the vast richness of Virginia’s musical culture and craft.

How interesting; my wife and I were in Harrisonburg a couple of weeks ago visiting my niece Ellissa Tiller and family. Ellissa is a physician with the local hospital. My 3rd great grandfather was a continental soldier from what was then Amherst county nearby to Harrisonburg. We live outside Atlanta.

Maybe you could suggest where we could hear some good music when we are there next time.

    Best Regards,
    Harold Tiller
