Who They Are:
Owner and operator Carey McCallum has created a socially conscious, independent bookstore and gift shop located at 112 E. Beverly St. in Staunton, VA. An eclectic selection of new and used books, fair trade arts and crafts, music, jewelry and other unique gifts can be found at The Sacred Circle, representing the diversity of the world’s spiritual and cultural heritage.
Entrepreneurial Philosophy:
Carey has focused on creating a business that is both a unique gift shop but also provides an educational niche in the Staunton community with the types of books and the handmade arts and crafts offered at The Sacred Circle. For Carey it’s about contributing to the Staunton community and beyond through a socially conscious business that encourages tolerance, promotes diversity, and educates individuals about other cultures. In order to do exactly that, Carey has worked to establish several book clubs in the area that currently include: The Sacred Circle Book Club, focusing on a range of books from novels to biographies; The Jnana Yoga Book Club, created in conjunction with Shanti Yoga of Staunton, focusing on spirituality; and Reading Liberally, focusing on social issues, politics and current events. The Sacred Circle also offers special classes and workshops on topics such as yoga, meditation, healthy living, and sustainability.
How did you get here?
A South Carolina native, Carey was introduced to Staunton by his sister (and employee of The Sacred Circle!) Laura, who originally came to the city to attend Mary Baldwin College, today he calls Staunton his “adopted home.” While brainstorming about starting a new business, Carey sought to create a store that brought together his interests in spirituality, world cultures, and social responsibility which ultimately manifested in the formation of The Sacred Circle.
