Who They Are:
Does exercising in 105 degree temperatures and 30%-40% humidity seem intimidating to you? For many people, this is the perfect setting for doing yoga. Bikram Yoga is a popular form of “hot” yoga that combines a series of postures with heat and humidity. Bikram Yoga Harrisonburg is a new yoga studio in downtown Harrisonburg that offers quality instruction in the Bikram method. Owners Anita Yoder and Kendall Wondergem have years of experience practicing yoga, and Kendall has been a successful teacher around Virginia for more than two years. Bikram Yoga Harrisonburg offers several classes per day, all taught by Bikram Certified teachers. In addition to classes, the studio sells supporting accessories, drinks, and clothing, and provides certain items for a rental fee, such as towels and mats. Bikram Yoga Harrisonburg even offers a state-of-the-art water purifying system to provide pure drinking water to students.
Entrepreneurial Philosophy:
“Our goal,” Anita and Kendall say, “is to create a community atmosphere at the studio where students feel welcome and at home.” Bikram Yoga Harrisonburg seeks to serve the community, encourage health and well-being, and make a positive impact on the lives of students. Their mission is:
- To honor, without compromise, the principles of Bikram Yoga.
- To meet the needs of our students on an individual level and without judgment.
- To provide a fun, positive, safe, and clean environment for students to grow and develop at their own pace, learning the discipline of Bikram Yoga, and to thrive in a community of support and inspiration.
Anita and Kendall take this community service mission to heart, seeking to make each student feel valued and to be a supportive member of local business networks. As a result, you will likely see Anita or Kendall around town or online sharing news and information with local residents; they also allow the community to share news on their studio bulletin board.
How did you get here?
For 21 years, Anita has owned and managed The Beauty Spa, a successful day spa in Harrisonburg. In that time, she has noticed a growing awareness of the value of self-motivated preventive health care. Anita has been a practitioner and researcher of yoga for over 30 years, and it has been her dream to open a Bikram yoga studio in her community so she can share this healing practice with others. Anita met Kendall in the fall of 2012 and asked her to join her in opening Bikram Yoga Harrisonburg. Kendall has practiced Bikram Yoga for five years and has been teaching for two years. She found that Bikram helped her alleviate stress, heal injuries, and improve her overall health considerably. She has a background in Information technology, business, management, and consulting, and she is a blogger (www.gratefulyogini.com) and is involved in numerous events promoting Bikram to the community of Northern Virginia. As a former resident of Staunton, Kendall has a familiarity and affinity for the Shenandoah Valley and looks forward to bringing Bikram to the community
